Spiral Computed Tomography

Computed Tomography (CT) has evolved continuously since its introduction to medical imaging in the early 1970s. Over the years, all major aspects (e.g., spatial resolution, low contrast detectability, and acquisition speed) have improved, through changes in both hardware and software.

The latest stage is where patient translation and data acquisition occur simultaneously through continuous rotating gantry and high-heat-capacity x-ray tube.

Computed Tomography derives its superb contrast resolution (image) by dividing up the measurement of the x-ray attenuation due to a thin (1-10mm) section along hundreds of thousands of precisely defined directions and using these measurements to reconstruct a cross-sectional image.
